Why Booking the Right Wedding Photographer Is About More Than Just Your Wedding

You’ve probably heard that your wedding photographer is one of the most important vendors you’ll book—and it’s true. But here’s the thing: it’s not just because they’ll be by your side all day capturing your memories. It’s because, if you choose right, they won’t just photograph your wedding… they’ll photograph your life.

Let me explain.

More Than a Vendor, a Teammate for Life

When you’re booking a photographer, you’re not hiring someone to show up, snap pretty pictures, and disappear. You're inviting them into some of your most intimate, emotional, and unforgettable moments. And if it’s the right fit? That relationship doesn’t end when the reception does.

Take The James Family. They originally booked me to photograph their Halloween wedding back in 2023—my very first year in business. We clicked instantly. A few months later, they reached out again: they were expecting a baby and wanted maternity photos. Fast forward, and I got to meet and photograph their sweet son, Harlem, during a cozy family session nearly a year later.

What started as “wedding photographer” turned into “maternity photographer,” then “family photographer”—and honestly? That’s one of the greatest honors of my job.

What to Look for in Your Photographer

It’s not just about camera gear or editing style (though those matter). It’s about connection, trust, and someone who makes you feel comfortable being fully yourself. Here’s what I recommend looking for:

1. Do you vibe with them?

You’ll spend hours together on your wedding day. If you can laugh together, breathe easy, and just be around them—that’s a great sign.

2. Can you see yourself working with them again?

You’re not just booking one day. You’re potentially booking the person who will document your growing family, anniversaries, big life transitions, and everything in between.

3. Can you meet them beforehand?

If possible, grab coffee, hop on a Zoom call, or better yet—do an engagement session. It’s the best way to see how they communicate, direct, and connect with you before the wedding.

4. Are they invested in your story, not just your photos?

When you find a photographer who sees you as more than just a client—someone who values your story, your quirks, your people—that’s when the magic happens.

A Photographer for the Long Haul

I've had clients tell me, "We didn’t just book our wedding photographer—we booked our life photographer." And that’s exactly how it should be.

Photos are personal. Your memories deserve someone who’s all in—not just technically, but emotionally. Someone who celebrates your milestones, remembers your dog’s name, tears up during your vows, and comes back a year later to meet your baby.

Whether it starts with a wedding, an elopement, or a golden hour session on a hilltop—I’m here for the long haul, if you’ll have me.

Let’s Tell Your Story

If you’re looking for more than just a vendor—someone who will invest in you, your people, and your memories—I’d love to be part of it.

Let’s start with your “yes” and see where the story goes from there.
